Turning the theory of physical literacy into practice

Activity Alliance has been an active member of the Positive Experiences Collective, this week they will host their first conference.

The Positive Experiences Collective Conference is set to bring people together from across sectors to share practical insights, tools, and stories that translate the theory of physical literacy into practice. The virtual event will take place on 25 June from 09:15.

Physical literacy is our relationship with movement and physical activity throughout life. Adam Blaze, our CEO, spoke during the launch of Sport England’s consensus statement in September 2023. More than 50 organisations from the world of sport, health, education, academia, and community sectors came together to unite perspectives on physical literacy.

From that launch the Positive Experiences Collective was created. It recognises that no single organisation or sector group "owns" the physical literacy agenda – instead, we need collective effort. The Positive Experiences Collective is open to all.

Charlie Crane, Head of Children and Young People for Sport England, said:

"Activity Alliance have been ongoing advocates for physical literacy since the Consensus Statement was published in 2023. They have gone above and beyond as mentors to share their expertise, guidance, and resources to help our twelve Patchwork Programme teams explore the design and delivery of positive movement experiences for children and young people with a special educational need or disabilities and their input and support has been greatly received."

Activity Alliance have been an active member, looking to inspire positive experiences of movement for children and young people. We have played a part in the Patchwork Programme. Named due to the combination of people, communities, circumstances, places and spaces that create our lifelong relationship with movement and physical activity. As mentors, alongside partners SENSE and MENCAP, we work to ensure opportunities created are inclusive for all.

We have applied physical literacy across our work, including programmes such as Get Out Get Active, and throughout our inclusive PE work supporting schools in the inclusion of all disabled children and young people.
