NGBs and disability sport charities share ideas at in-person event

National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) and National Disability Sport charities came together to share, learn and celebrate all things inclusion and disability sport.

A room of people sit looking at a TV screen with two people stood at the front presenting.

Held at the national Cycling Centre in Manchester, Activity Alliance and Access Sport brought together those responsible for increasing opportunities for disabled people at NGBs and disability sports charities.

Previous meetings and events with both groups had highlighted a common theme. Those involved felt more time was needed to network with similar partners in the sport and physical activity sector.  The combined event last month was piloted because of this feedback.

Hosted at the home of British Cycling, guest speakers from both groups shared best practice and learnings from their respective disability specific programmes, research and projects.

Paul Downes from Activity Alliance said:

"These events are so vital to share, learn and network between to the two groups and these alliances will grow ever stronger as we strive to create the best conditions for building inclusive partnerships across the sector."

Speakers from Sense focussed on sensory sports projects and how they have built strong connections with sports such as Tennis, Rounders, Badminton and Snooker. Whilst other speakers from British Ice skating shared best practice, learning and insight from their ‘Let’s Skate’ projects.

Updates and insight from the world of climbing, Inclusive workforce development and British Triathlon were all well received. The day was completed with a round of speed networking sessions, where all parties were challenged to meet and greet each other and take away new connections and build new relationship revolving around national campaigns to place based projects.

Shannon Howarth (Partnerships manger for UK Deaf Sport) said:

"Thank you for the event. Some great presentations and opportunities to connect with NGBs all in one space which we don't get to do very often."

While Eve Jospeh (EDI lead from British Triathlon) commented:

"I really found the event useful, particularly to meet some new faces. I have a couple of great follow ups to have with Limb Power, Wheel Power, Activity Alliance, British Cycling and Sense."
