No one should have to choose between being physically active and maintaining their financial security. That is the message at the heart of new research exploring the Activity Trap, the fear that being seen as physically active could affect a disabled person’s eligibility for disability benefits.

Understanding the Activity Trap

The Activity Trap was first highlighted in landmark research published by Activity Alliance in 2018, commissioned by Dwarf Sports Association UK. The issue remains a significant barrier to disabled people being active.

For the new research, Disability Rights UK and Durham University worked with disabled people to explore how the Activity Trap affects people today. More than 200 disabled people completed a questionnaire, while a further 30 took part in in-depth interviews.

The findings suggest that the Activity Trap is not simply a fear or perception. Disabled people are experiencing financial consequences linked to perceptions of their physical activity.

Participants identified the benefits application process, particularly healthcare assessments, as key points where they can feel at risk of the Activity Trap.

Join the webinar

The webinar will provide an opportunity to hear directly from the lead researcher about the findings, recommendations and what needs to happen next.

During the session, we’ll explore:

  • The key findings from the latest Activity Trap research.
  • Why the Activity Trap continues to influence disabled people’s decisions about being active.
  • How the benefits application and assessment process can affect participation in physical activity.
  • Opportunities to influence policy and campaign for changes to the benefits assessment process.
  • What the findings could mean for the choices disabled people make about being active, now and in the future.

Why this matters

Disabled people have the right to be active. Yet the fear of financial consequences can prevent people from taking part in sport, physical activity and everyday movement.

The new research highlights the need for action so that disabled people can be active without fearing that doing so could put their financial security at risk.

The webinar will bring together people from across sport, physical activity, policy and advocacy to understand the evidence and consider how we can help drive meaningful change.

Join us on Thursday 22 October at 13:30 to hear about the research and be part of the conversation about how we can dismantle the Activity Trap.
